Outgoing students: FU Berlin students that wish to study at a partner university
Incoming students: Students from partner universities that wish to study at the FU Berlin
You will find quite some useful information on the homepage of the main Erasmus office of the FU Berlin (Brümmerstr. 52, Berlin-Dahlem). This information is more general and relates to the prerequisites to be accepted, to the application procedure including the necessary forms, to ECTS credit points, and to insurance matters. We don't repeat this information here. So, please make sure that you have carefully read it. If you'd like to study abroad for one semester, you should well plan in advance and take into account the following somewhat more chemistry-specific points:
Choose one of the chemistry department's partner universities from the following list. With these universities, we currently have contracts. You can find information on the study plans on their homepages. Just follow the links. The application deadlines at the partner universities are given in the Table. Make sure that your application is submitted early enough to finish the whole process before that deadline. Please note that to our current experience it can be quite difficult to establish new contracts - in particular with anglosaxon unversities which have much more incoming students than outgoing students. Consequently, we can establish new contracts only under particular conditions.
Note:
The following table contains all data available to me for your support. Should you find any more informative pages which you believe to be useful for future students, please let me know (email: schalley[@]chemie.fu-berlin.de) and I will check them and publish them as links here. Similarly, I appreciate much, if you find missing information (e.g. term dates) or help to keep the site up-to-date.Denmark

Submit your complete application in time. We cannot process incomplete applications. You will find the necessary information on the main Erasmus offices homepage
If there are more students interested in a certain partner university than places available, the places will be strictly assigned according to the student's performance. Consequently, we strongly suggest that you submit a transcript of records together with your application!
Applications of students obviously not performing well enough to guarantee a successful term abroad will not be supported, even if the number of places would be sufficient. You will go abroad as a representative of the Free University and we expect you to meet this expectation!
You need to provide a list of courses you want to follow at our partner university. You are required to inform yourselves about the courses offered at these universities. Fill in the "learning agreement" which needs to be signed by the coordinators of both participating universities. The learning agreement is intended to make sure that the courses studied abroad are comparable to those at the FU and can be accepted as equivalent when you come back and successfully passed. In the event of the requirement to change courses on arrival at the host university, this can be done using the form "Changes to Original Learning Agreement"
It is a prerequisite that you are able to follow the courses at the partner universities. That means that you need to speak the host country's language at least to some extent. If that is not the case, you should consider taking language courses either before you go or (if offered at the partner university) in your host country. You can find information on language courses through the EILC website.
You will find information on how to proceed on the homepage of our main Erasmus office. We do not repeat all the information here. So, please make sure, you have read it carefully. The following points, some of which are more chemistry-related need consideration from your side:
General information for foreign students: Check these web pages. They are offered in English as well as German and contain a lot of information.
Deadlines for 2007 for incoming students: May 1st for the winter term 2007/2008 and Nov 1st for the summer term 2008
You should carefully check the pages on the chemistry courses offered at Free University of Berlin when preparing the learning agreement. We expect you to do that yourself, but of course we will try to help, if uncertainties remain or you have questions. The following list of links may be helpful. Please make sure that you can study the courses you select. Some of them have certain requirements (e.g. Organic Chemistry II cannot be taken without having studied Organic Chemistry I or the equivalent to it in your home country). Please also refer to the timetable of the Bachelor program and make sure that the courses you select aren't held at the same times. For the master program there is no such detailed time table, because there is more freedom to choose courses of interest. You can find most of the times during which the courses are held in the university calender (see link below). Due to differences in the study plans from country to country it can sometimes by quite tricky to figure out a good learning agreement. Since we usually don't know your home university study plans in great detail, we can only be of limited help. We sometimes make some compromises, to avoid situations in which it would be more or less impossible to align the study programs at both universities just for buerocratic reasons.
Commented University Calendar: Some courses are only held once a year. Please make sure that you take that into account. If you want to come in the winter term, please check the latest winter term (2007/08) university calendar. If you want to come in summer, please prepare using the latest summer term (2007) university calendar.
For most courses, you will find the number of ECTS credit points given in these information pages. If there remain uncertainties, you can go for the following rules: 1 hour of a whole-semester lecture course per week is worth 1.5 ECTS points (example: Organic Chemstry I comprises 4 hours per week and runs during the whole semester. Thus, it is rewarded with 6 ECTS points), 1 hour of a whole-semester seminar or excercise per week is worth 1.0 ECTS points, 1 week of a practical course open monday to friday half-days (usually within the semester) is worth 1 P, 1 week of a practical course open all day (usually between two semesters) is worth 1.5 P.
You should be aware of the fact that our Bachelor courses are taught in German. Consequently, you should be able to speak German well enough to follow the courses when you arrive. There are some German courses offered by some institutions here in Berlin. Also, see the EILC webpage of the EU for more information on language courses. Please inquire with the main Erasmus office about the current possibilities. The MSc courses within our bilingual masters program can be given in either German or English, the choice of which is left to your instructor. The Free University usually expects that students at least are able to follow courses in one of these languages.
Non-chemical, but nevertheless quite important: For some countries (e.g. Turkey) that are associated, but not member countries of the European Union, special visa rules apply for entering Germany. Please make sure that you plan the visa formalities early on, if that applies to you.
